NORTH BEACH CHANGING
Here are a few images from an extended project on social change in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. Rapid change has come to San Francisco, and North Beach is gentrifying and 'boutiquing.' Despite residents' efforts to retain its character, it seems barely to hold still long enough to have its picture taken. Most consistently San Francisco's Little Italy, North Beach has been a fishing village, a bohemia, a womb of the Beat Generation, a topless sensation, and now a tourist magnet – but always a center of the City's attractiveness and creativity.
